I’ve been a licensed ham radio operator for about 18 years, and I went into PoC radios pretty skeptical. After putting them to work in real-world scenarios, I can say they absolutely have a place and, in the right situations, they perform exceptionally well.

Where these radios really stand out is range and coordination without needing to build out infrastructure. Traditional radios, even solid commercial setups, can struggle in dense urban environments. When your operations center is in a hotel basement surrounded by high-rise buildings, your range can drop to almost nothing. Repeaters can help, but they’re not always practical for temporary or mobile operations. Using LTE, these radios maintain reliable communication whether your team is across town or across state lines.

They also bring features that significantly improve coordination. Instant push-to-talk group communication, GPS tracking, and recorded audio logs all in one system make a real difference. Being able to replay transmissions or see where your team is in real time adds a level of awareness and accountability that standard radios don’t offer.

The Ultra model adds another layer of flexibility with FRS/GMRS capability. That hybrid approach is extremely useful. You can have local teams operating on traditional radio while others stay connected over LTE, and everyone can still communicate seamlessly. It also means you’re not completely dependent on cellular, since you still have short-range capability if needed.

For personal or family use, these radios also solve a unique problem. They provide simple, reliable communication without the risks that come with smartphones, especially for younger users. Group calling, direct contact, and location awareness give peace of mind while keeping things straightforward.

There are still tradeoffs. Wide-area coverage depends on cellular, and like any service-based platform, long-term value depends on the company’s stability. But those are considerations, not dealbreakers.

Overall, if your needs involve mobility, distance, and coordinated communication without setting up infrastructure, this is a strong and well-designed solution. It’s not a replacement for every type of radio, but it fills a gap that traditional systems don’t handle nearly as well.

How do I switch modes?

It's instant and requires no menus. The POC-1 Ultra has two separate PTT (Push-to-Talk) buttons: one for LTE and one for Analog. You are always in complete control and choose the mode you need simply by pressing the corresponding button.

What is the real-world range?

LTE Mode: The range is effectively unlimited. As long as you and your group members have a cellular signal, you can talk across the city, state, or even country.
Off Grid Mode: The range depends on the terrain. In real-world wooded or mountain terrain, the typical range is around 1–3 miles. In wide open areas (flat land, water, clear line-of-sight), it can reach up to 35 miles.

How do I download and use the Poclink App?

You can download the Poclink app for free from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). Just search for “Poclink” or "Poclink radios".

The POC-1 Ultra is designed for group communication, not for making regular mobile phone calls. It does not dial or ring standard mobile phone numbers.However, if both radios are connected to the Poclink app, you and your friends can communicate through the app on your smartphones within the same group. Even if you don’t have the radio with you, you can still use the app to stay connected and talk with your group.

Is an EU PMR446 version available?

Who can see my GPS location?

Your privacy is critical. Your location is only shared with the members of your private, encrypted group based on your choice and is only visible on the secure map inside our app. It is never public, and you can turn off location sharing at any time.
